Getting Started: From Scratch to Launch
3. Choose your Topic Wisely
Next, you need to choose a topic to build your affiliate marketing business around. When I read the Super Affiliate Handbook… and started Niche Blitzkrieg I got some great ideas for how to brainstorm topics…
Think About What You Do Every Day
At work, at home, at play… you are an expert about the things you do every single day. Think about your daily conversations with friends and colleagues. When you offer your 2 cents to folks, what is it about? If someone asks, “that ____ is fantastic! Where did you get it?” You happily tell them… (you just advertised for that business, BTW – if only you’d get paid for that, right?!) This is where you should start, where you have some expertise. Ask yourself how you could help others with regards to this topic, too. Your answer, for example, might be that you can help others to find that “fantastic thing” (and more…) that your peers asked you about!
For me, choosing a general topic was a no-brainer. I’m a musician and primarily teach private music lessons in my home. I make recommendations to my students every day about how to practice, how to perform, what music to buy and where to buy it, and I offer suggestions for new instruments, gear, gadgets and gifts. So, my general topic is music.
Narrow It Down Into a “Niche”
Music, however, is way too huge of a subject to try and put into one web site. (Besides, the domain, Music.com, was already in use!) When I began www.MusicianTip.com, I had heard that it is good practice to put your specfic topic in your domain name so that readers can find you more easily, but I didn’t know about keyword research to help narrow my general topic down into a “niche” – like a section of the wall that is the general topic. Better, still, would be to narrow it down into a single brick of that general wall!
So the “niche” I decided to build an affiliate marketing business around in this step-by-step guide is “music-themed art and decorations”.
