Getting Started: From Scratch to Launch
8. Install WordPress
Once you have signed up for hosting, it’s time to install WordPress. WordPress is web software you can use to build your web site, online. Without hesitation, WordPress was recommended to me by everyone I spoke with about affiliate marketing and everyone I learned from and studied, as the easiest, quickest way to get a web site up and running. And… it’s FREE!!
I’m a die-hard MAC user, so the “easy” part was not so easy – I had to learn a bit in order to get comfortable finding my way through the options available on WordPress. I even explored the options of installing a web site built through Adobe’s Dreamweaver or even through the Mobile Me options through my Mac, but I learned that WordPress is better geared toward SEO – Search Engine Optimization – to get content found easier by Google, Yahoo and other search engines.
Here’s How
Using Bluehost as your hosting server, all you have to do is scroll down on your main cpanel page to “Site Builders” Heading and click on the WordPress icon. Then click the green button at the bottom to “Install.” Then, in Step 1, all you have to do is select the latest version of WordPress and type in the url of your new domain name (mine is “http://music-decor.com”).
Under Step 2, click the link that says “Click here to display” to show Advanced Options. Here, you’ll enter your admin name, which is your user name, and password that you’ll use to work on and build your web site. Check the box to “Automatically create a database.”
Then in Step 3, I would de-select the boxes to install the added plugins and themes because WordPress itself has oodles of plugins and themes to choose from for free that will do just fine, for now.
Next, click the link to read the “license agreement” then check the box once you’ve actually read it.
It may take a few minutes, but you should be able to type your url address in the web address bar and see the generic WordPress theme. Voila – this was the most exciting step for me. Now, everyone can type in www.music-decor.com and there is actually something there (go ahead, try it!), not “an error has occurred – page cannot be found…” message from the browser!
Now, to interrupt the marveling… there’s much work to do.
